To mark the approach of the fifth month of the year, here are five reasons why you should visit Bath County during the month of May:
The Best Weather.
May is the third month of spring. In some parts of the south, it may already feel like summer. Because of our location in the mountains of Virginia, May offers close to perfect weather in Bath County. Many wildflowers are still in bloom. It’s not uncommon to see flowering dogwoods in early May, even though they are long since passed in lower elevations of the Commonwealth. All month long, the weather is ideal for being outdoors, like hiking, biking, horseback riding, or playing a round of golf on one of the most acclaimed courses in the mid-Atlantic.
So Fly Fest.
From May 5 – 8, you will find this unique and fun festival centered in Warm Springs, but with events happening all across the county. So Fly Fest has been voted a Best of the Blue Ridge Fly Fishing Event by the readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors. Over the course of four days, there are opportunities to improve your fly-casting skills, learn to tie your own flies and, of course, get on the water and fish. That’s really just the beginning of this festival. There are cocktail receptions, goat cheese making lessons and more.
Make Mom Feel Special.
What busy mom wouldn’t love a relaxing family getaway for Mother’s Day? When you celebrate this holiday in Bath County, treat mom to a day at a spa, a bottle of local wine or cider, and a fantastic meal at one of the county’s exceptional restaurants. If visiting over Mother’s Day just isn’t in the cards, think outside the box and give a gift certificate to a local inn, resort or restaurant for a future getaway.
Foodlore.
Here are two great ways to support local farmers and enjoy fresh, healthy foods:
-
- Foodlore Provisions is a convenient way to select items online from a partnership of local farms. Simply place your order by Wednesday, and then pick it up at Oakley Farm in warm Springs on Friday. If it’s the end of your visit to Bath County, this is a great way to take a taste of Bath County home. If you’re just arriving for your stay, this is a way to have some healthy additions to your kitchenette. Foodlore Provisions begins in April and continues through the fall.
- Foodlore Fridays is a popular weekly celebration of food, farming and community. Whether you order from Foodlore Provisions or not, stop by Oakley Farm and shop the pop-up store, sample cider and enjoy whatever specialty is being prepared in the customized airstream kitchen. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy food and fun in a beautiful setting. Foodlore Fridays kicks off on May 27 and occurs every Friday through Labor Day.
Escape the Crowds.
It’s true, we could use this reason in all twelve months. People plan getaways to Bath County any time of year to escape crowds. There are no mega-malls, interstate highways or even stoplights in Bath County. Still, May is quieter than mid-summer when school is out and more families are here on vacation. If you really enjoy quiet and solitude, plan a mid-week getaway.
