Each year, the readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine vote for places, experiences and businesses in the Best of the Blue Ridge contest. Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm, situated along the Cowpasture River in Millboro on the northern side of Bath County, could easily have been a contender in at least five categories, including Instagrammable Spot, Place to Watch the Sunset, Place to Stargaze, Best Swimming Hole. Not to mention, there is a pretty awesome restaurant at Fort Lewis.
It turns out that they were nominated in the category Best Resort. That put Fort Lewis in what may have been the most competitive category in the contest. They were competing against giants like The Greenbrier in West Virginia and Omni Grove Park Inn in North Carolina and several others. It was David vs. Goliath vs. Goliath. It may seen like a stunning upset to some but it’s no surprise to anyone who has ever visited Fort Lewis that this Bath County gem emerged as First Runner Up in the category of Best Resort.
Fort Lewis Lodge & Farm is a slice of heaven that doesn’t perfectly fit into any single category. Overnight accommodations include free-standing rental cabins, but there are also lodge-style rooms which create a B&B atmosphere for some guests. As the name suggests it is a working farm. The menu in the restaurant features a lot of their own products, as well as items from other local growers. It’s farm-to-table done right, because you can actually see the farm from the restaurant window.
Three thousand acres, three miles of the Cowpasture River and miles of hiking and biking trails provide outdoor fun for guests. Fly fisherman pull trophy trout from the river. Others enjoy a leisurely float in one of the lodge’s kayaks. There is even a spot along with river with a gentle slope that is a picture-perfect, old-fashioned swimming hole. It’s easy to see why some guests park their vehicle upon arrival and don’t leave until they have to reluctantly check out.
